Although not recorded as a album, the core strength of this collection of recordings is the tying together of similar production and lyrical themes. Sitting somewhere between indie mid-tempo rock and experimental alternative folk, all of the tracks except the last one, were conceived with Jonathan Anderson at his studio Protection Island in various sessions from 2005-2015.
Having spent a lot of time traveling and playing in the USA from 2007-2011, Jack’s first ever protest songs were born. Although not related to any particular event, Economy of Love, Secret Behind the Sun, You Can’t Kill This Love That I’ve Been Born With and We Are Alive embody the 60’s era concept of a love and peace revolution, encouraging a stripping away of the greed and needs of the few against the useless buying and corporate messaging that leads us further away from true happiness. Within the songs of deep personal struggle on Lost and Returning we find a relationship with ourself that needs mending. A self-help handbook/Ted Talk encouraging us to dismantle the thoughts and beliefs that block us from the best in ourselves.
ALBUM LYRICS
Promise
Lord you got to tell me
I’ve earned a right to know
It’s not a case of going backwards
But moving forward to slow
Dreams replaced
Hearing eulogy waste
You know I got the shit
But I’ve gambled on nothing of late
Silence is enraged
Silhouetted vultures
Across the morning sun
They pick apart my silence
Keep me on the run
But I wonder what would have happened
If someone would have let me know
Guess they did
But I didn’t have the courage
To set course and go
It’s not that I’m too old
I’m just stuck in the middle
Of generic genetic codes
I need a song with wings
Cause this train ain’t on time
I’m running out of excuses
For falling behind
What happened to the sound
Thought at least I had you
Can’t contain this thought of failing
When I’m seeing what others can do
Some saying I’m paying my dues
Well, I would have could have should have
Are you sending me a clue?
That your promise is dead
I’m still speaking in rhymes
This drink has gone to my head
And I’m seeing things twice
Your promise is dead
Twist of my fragile mind
How long do you keep a dream alive for?
Before you just become blind
Your promise is dead
How Shall I Carry On
Well today I thought of tomorrow
Down a street of sorrow
Walking through the drizzling rain
And today there was nothing left to borrow
Except these lonesome feelings
Riding on a weary train
How shall I carry I carry on
Here I am
I’m fading in the evening
Many miles from my morning
Many miles from an Alberta dawn
Here I am
I’m lost in these in these feelings
My eyes in the darkest season
That they’ve ever known
How shall I carry I carry on
There’s too many highways
Ditches and dead ends
Too many empty bottles
Too many lost friends
Give me the strength Lord
To suspend this belief
That I’m not simply good enough
To be what I was born to be
Economy of Love
We’re sending solders home to God before the world’s end
Claim every life spent is a means to defend
Fundamental zealots and the President on strings
Taping conversations and the songs that free birds sing
We’re taught less about love and more how to be afraid
Spending billions on a message about a enemy at our gate
It’s always a war for the sake of a few men’s needs
We could use all that money to get New Orleans off its knees
Citizens’ get fooled by patriotic schemes
Solders fighting for reasons not what they seem
Commander wants more money to get the job done
While the land of freedom has a lot of people with none
Love come around
Love come around
We have been divided and the hounds have come unbound
Love come around
Won’t love come around?
Come on stick together
Don’t give up on me now
Cause my door is open
My sign says come
Economy of Love
Let’s grow it
Let someone you don’t know
Let them know that have been loved tonight
What have we been learning since a Vietnam
Is how to kill them in the jungles now how to in sand
What have we been learning since the two towers fell
In the name of heaven we raised a lot of hell
We fear each other when our government should fear us
Think the rest of the world should be living like us
Distracted, dumbfounded, disease of decadence
NWO laughing while we feed inside the fence
Love come around
Love come around
We have been divided and the hounds have come unbound
Love come around
Won’t love come around?
Come on stick together
Don’t give up on me now
Cause my door is open
My sign says come
Economy of Love
Let’s grow it
Let someone you don’t know
Let them know that have been loved tonight
Empty Hand
You don’t know what to do with your Fridays anymore
All you know is where you will be on Monday when you go out the door
Time like a hammer and nail on your casket and on your courage again
You got an empty hand
Give me your hand
You got a empty hand
I’m not a empty man
But you got empty hand
Don’t you know love demands a starling
You think you are free
Don’t you know your fear gives all the orders
Say there’s no love in your heart
It was never anyone other than you who built the borders
I kick at the jukebox ask why it plays trash
You put in another quarter
You got an empty hand
Give me your hand
You got a empty hand
I’m not a empty man
But you got empty hand
Don’t you know love demands a starling
Starling
Don’t loose me tonight
Starling
Open up your sky
Starling
Don’t loose me tonight
Cause were too young to die
But too old to tell such lies
The Memory and Pain
Give me that bottle
And I’ll drink it dry
I don’t know,
Guess I’ve always needed something to get me by
Popping these pills
My head going faster than I can contain
I hold the memory I hold the pain
I was young when I left home
Too young to be stuck there forever
I knew what I was meant to be just couldn’t believe in never say never
I got no idea how to keep well-maintained while living the mundane
While I am holding this memory and this pain
I could go back to the West Coast find familiar faces and scenes
But you know you got nothing when you what to go where you have already been
And I don’t belong in this here town make no difference got no roots to this name
Just got a memory, just got a pain
I can’t be holding on to what you told me I could not be
And I can’t be clinging on to these branches of this broken family tree
I can’t be in your house too long, cause nothing will ever change
While we are holding the memory and holding this pain
Oh let me rise up and be in what I have
And not in what I don’t or what I had and then lost
I hold the memory, let go the memory
I Was Lost but am Returning
Like a new born baby
In a old world turning
Do what I fear to do
Let fear loose itself
Down a darkened hallway
That I have now stepped out
I was lost but am returning
Descending doves
Lift me up from my hurting
The mistakes I made
Become thin air
Luck a choice to answer
What’s always been there
I was lost but I am returning
To the place I was
Before I started learning
The failures of others
And their truths over me
Without fear or force
But trust in harmony
You Can’t kill this love that I’ve Been Born With
Put you in mazes to places that look the same as other places
Becoming complacent with water fluoridation
Give you an education and they don’t care if those roads lead nowhere.
Manipulated seeds, the flight of bees
Lost in darkened seas with silent screams
cashless society, marks of a beast
Exhausted from computer screens, tv reality scenes
It’s only when you close your eyes you can truly see it
The child transmits and I am receiving
In the arms of the forest no churches needed for believing
Defined by only what you go, let go
We are awake now
Dancing around this fire
My body, my heart and breath now
Are one with the beating of a drum
Putting things in cages, circuses, breeding ground, zoos, in front of children’s faces
We talk of freedom when we are the ones who live in really big cages
Keep us in the state of relating to what you propagate
A sickness and a cure, both of which you create
Makes me sicker the more I take
The more sickness there is the more you make
But your not going to make it from me
I don’t need a flu shot for free
We are awake now
Dancing around this fire
My body, my heart and breath now
Are one with the beating of a drum
Secret Behind the Sun
These eyes have been blinded
By the ashes of American dreams
Can’t afford to call the doctor
Hard believe in the land of the free
It’s a masquerade of peace
Using mothers sons in every useless war
These days everyone got the fight inside them
More fight than reasons for
They’re sure to give us fear
Be prepared to be profiled
Watch out for what someone could be hiding
Could be a gun
Could be the latest style
We are going to rise up
Off of our knees
And catch that wing of a dove
In the dirt and blood among the leaves
When there is no will for power
When we care less about whose won
It is then we will know
The secret behind the sun
I am sun I am the sun that gives light to the sun
Maxed out in isolation
Intoxicated by the seeds
We no longer want what you’ve been feeding us
We know what goes on behind the scenes
We don t need to kill in the name of religion
Your religion is an enemy of God
I am not sure these days where God is
But I surly know where he is not
We are going to rise up
Off of our knees
And catch that wing of a dove
In the dirt and blood among the leaves
When there is no will for power
When we care less about whose won
It is then we will know
The secret behind the sun
I am the sun I am the sun that gives light to the sun
Come on people rise
Say it like you mean it
Peace could be a smile
For someone who has never seen one
We Are Alive
We will rise from this hormonal mud
To where your aim has been blinding by the sun
You are nothing without guns
Even with the weight of this edema and screaming
I will remember every head from your iron vice
You are nothing without knives
I will make you stand in one spot your whole life
Beat me with a stick while my skin is ripped
You slip on my skin to comfort the dog at your side
He wears a collier of hides
Forcibly fed
With a life that has been spent
Being impregnated over and over again
Pull another out of the pen
When I can’t walk
Of no more use
My fate worse than a noose
I saw my baby once and I never saw her again
You think you need it
Just because you read it
But ones who wrote it
Are with the ones who sold it knowing
It’s for one machine
And If you had to kill
All you eat at will
It would it not be possible
Custodians of greed
How much you think you need
I don’t know about you, but I don’t see anyone around here really dying from a lack of protein
And if we are spirits
Having a human experience
Then why are we less than human
Torturing to consume
Love some eat some we pick and choose
You are looking for land and water
But what your eating now will be our ruin
We are alive
Get Me Out of This Town
When we kissed
I knew you missed your walls
I wish I didn’t know
But I’m knowing it all too well
You’re an actress
Your boyfriend is actor
But I’m an embalmer
Guess that’s a good ending
I’m not proud
How I made my rounds
Can’t make a sound
Can’t make a sound
Just Get Me Out of This Town
Whose that singing now
Whose bringing clouds into the room?
Why do all singers remind me of the end?
I guess there’s more endings than forevers
We’re desperate
But we hate to admit it
We’re desperate
Being with someone doesn’t make you less desperate
I’m not proud
How I made my rounds
Can’t make a sound
Can’t make a sound
Just Get Me Out of This Town
Get Me Out of Your Town
This Time Around
The battle it was raging
All the soldiers left their post
It was not a matter of defeat
Nor not loving their country the most
They told them it was for freedom
But freedom where’s a corporate crown
Not This Time Around
The media they were restless
But the pop star was not there
She was dancing with the natives
In a pow wow somewhere
She’s shaved her hair off
She looks more like her true self now
This Time Around
The latter it is splitting
And his net worth is growing thin
Their grabbing at his briefcase
For the secrets within
But he’s no longer running
With that shameless crowd
The love that you make
Is all you can take
To this burying ground
